Yanni tên khai sinh là Yiannis Hrysomallis, sinh ngày 14/11/1954 tại Kalamata, Hy Lạp. Yanni là một nghệ sĩ dương cầm, keyboard, nhà soạn nhạc và nhà sản xuất âm nhạc.
Nếu Kitaro là đỉnh cao của trường phái âm nhạc Phương Đông, thì Yanni chính là cực còn lại của âm nhạc Phương Tây. Âm nhạc Yanni thể hiện 2 dòng cảm xúc lớn hoành tráng và trữ tình.

Yanni tự học piano và bộc lộ rõ tài năng âm nhạc của chính mình qua những lời thuật lại của những thành viên trong gia đình ông. Năm 18 tuổi, Yanni di cư đến Mỹ học đại học Minnesota và lấy bằng cử nhân về môn tâm lý học. Sau khi tốt nghiệp, ông bắt đầu sự nghiệp âm nhạc của mình, mặc dù ông lúc này chưa biết đọc nốt nhạc, và chưa qua một lớp đào tạo nào hẳn hoi.
Mặc dù nhiều người hâm mộ và các nhà phê bình gọi là âm nhạc hiện đại (New Age) nhưng ông thích gọi âm nhạc của mình là âm nhạc đương đại (Contemporary Instrumental).
Năm 1992 Dare to Dream được phát hành. Đó là album được đề cử Grammy đầu tiên Yanni.
